45-Foot Response Boat-Medium (RB-M 45) Engineer Practice Exam

Using a pre-blend (50/50) coolant in the RB-M 45 is correct because this mixture is specifically designed to provide optimal protection for the engine cooling system. A 50/50 blend typically consists of 50% antifreeze and 50% water, which ensures adequate protection against freezing in colder temperatures while also helping to raise the boiling point, reducing the risk of overheating.

This mixture also contains corrosion inhibitors that help protect the metal components of the cooling system from rust and corrosion, which is particularly crucial for marine vessels like the RB-M 45 that operate in harsh environments. The balanced mixture further aids in efficient heat transfer.

Other options, such as full-strength antifreeze, do not dilute the antifreeze with water, which can lead to insufficient heat transfer and increased viscosity, making it less effective in a system designed for a balanced mixture. A water-only mixture lacks the necessary antifreeze properties and protective additives, making it unsuitable for the demands of the engine cooling system. Enhanced coolant formulas may contain additional additives not required for the RB-M 45’s specifications; therefore, sticking with the recommended 50/50 blend ensures the engine operates efficiently and safely.
